Jonathan Edward Russell (born 9 October 2000) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Barnsley FC and the Jamaica national team.

Early Life and Youth Career

Born in Hounslow, England, Russell began his football journey at a young age, joining Chelsea’s youth academy at under-7 level. He progressed through the ranks, turning professional with the club in October 2017.

Club Career

  • Chelsea FC (2017–2021): Despite his long tenure in Chelsea’s youth system, Russell did not make a senior appearance for the club.

  • Accrington Stanley (Loan: 2020–2021): In October 2020, he was loaned to Accrington Stanley, where he gained valuable first-team experience, making 25 league appearances and scoring two goals.

  • Huddersfield Town (2021–2023): Russell signed with Huddersfield Town in July 2021. He made a notable impact by scoring a late winner in a 2–1 victory against Cardiff City on 23 February 2022. During his time with Huddersfield, he accumulated 24 league appearances and netted two goals.

  • Barnsley FC (2023–Present): On 31 January 2023, Russell transferred to Barnsley FC, competing in EFL League One. As of February 2025, he has made 67 league appearances and scored seven goals for the club.

International Career

Eligible to represent Jamaica through his heritage, Russell received his first call-up to the Jamaica national team on 13 September 2022. He debuted on 26 March 2023 in a CONCACAF Nations League match against Mexico, coming on as a substitute in the 66th minute. He scored his first international goal on 2 July 2023 during the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, contributing to Jamaica’s 5–0 victory.
