History of Jamaica's Football
Football in Jamaica dates back to 1893, when the Kingston Cricket Club formed the island’s first football team. By 1910, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) was established to oversee the sport’s development.
Jamaica’s first recorded international matches took place in 1925, when the national team was invited to Haiti for a three-match series. They secured victory in all three encounters, winning 1–0, 2–1, and 3–0. The following year, Haiti traveled to Jamaica for a rematch at Sabina Park, where the home team dominated with a 6–0 win.
Caribbean triumph and World Cup appearance
Jamaica made its international tournament debut at the 1930 Central American Games in Cuba, though the team faced early elimination after losing both group stage matches.
Football Rivalries and Growth (1925–1962)
Between 1925 and 1962, Jamaica regularly competed against regional teams from Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti, and Cuba, as well as club teams such as Haitian Racing CH, Violette AC, the British Corinthians, and the Argentinean Tigers.
One of the most notable football events in the 1950s was the formation of the Caribbean All-Star team in 1952. This elite squad featured top players from Trinidad, Cuba, Haiti, and Suriname and played a four-match series against Jamaica at Sabina Park. The results were evenly split:
Jamaica secured victories in the second match (2–1) and the fourth match (1–0)
The Caribbean All-Stars won the first match (5–1) and the third match (1–0)
These early years laid the foundation for Jamaica’s football culture, setting the stage for the sport’s evolution on the island.
