Canada announced themselves at their home World Cup in style, thrashing Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver for their first-ever victory in the tournament — and Jonathan David was the headline act with a hat-trick.

Cyle Larin opened the scoring on a rebound before David took over, volleying home in the 29th minute, bundling in a third in first-half stoppage time, and completing his treble deep in the second half. Nathan Saliba's curling free-kick and a Qatar own goal completed the rout.

The night had a chaotic edge — Qatar finished with nine men after two red cards, and Canada lost Ismaël Koné to a serious leg injury. But the result put Jesse Marsch's side on the brink of the knockouts, a place they would go on to secure.
